DEATH is one of the few certainties, it is said.
But it is what happens after that in which young people should be taking more of an interest, Deputy Public Trustee, NSW, Tony Steinmetz said.Mr Steinmetz is travelling the NSW coast to spread the news among surfers and others of the importance of a professionally drafted will in honour of national Good Will Week, October 14 to 20."Young people typically think they are bullet-proof or don't think they have any assets to protect," Mr Steinmetz said."But they forget about their superannuation or a payout on an insurance policy should they die unexpectedly."Newspoll has found 42 per cent of NSW adults do not have a will, so their estates will be distributed according to a government formula."Loved ones may not get anything or have to fight to get what should be theirs," Mr Steinmetz said. Some young people had no will because they thought "it's not going to happen to me", he said. The Public Trustee NSW office is appointed executor to 12,000 wills a year, paying out about $500 million."We're trying to raise awareness that a professionally drafted will is so important, no matter who is appointed as executor," Mr Steinmetz said.
