DON'T let a spate of bad health ruin a long-anticipated overseas holiday.

Plan your trip carefully and take steps to ensure you're well prepared for travel.

When planning your trip it's wise to check the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade smartraveller website (smartraveller.gov.au).

It includes safety tips and health information. Intrepid travellers can also access up-to-date travel advisories.

Travellers should organise travel insurance before departure to prevent unexpected medical costs.

Travel insurance can be handy in a difficult situation, as it provides cover for general medical expenses, existing medical conditions, hospitalisations and medical evacuations.

Uninsured travellers or their families are held liable for medical costs incurred overseas.

Travellers should also make an appointment with their doctor or travel clinic for a basic check-up.

Some vaccinations or health checks can be required at least six to 12 weeks before departure.

Overseas travellers should check if it is safe to consume tap water in their country of destination, as common infections can be caused by contaminated food or water.

To find out whether you can travel with prescribed medicine, travellers should contact the destination country's embassy or high commission in Australia.
